La cinta narrará la historia de los hermanos Waters, un auténtico ejemplo de estoicismo y solidaridad sobre todo por parte Betty Anne, hermana de Kenny Waters que en 2001 fue puesto en libertad tras haber pasado nada menos que 18 años encarcelado en Walpole por un asesinato que no cometió. Betty Anne, por entonces camarera en un bar cualquiera de Estados Unidos, era una mujer de 28 años divorciada y con dos hijos. Tras ser su hermano condenado a cadena perpetua y con la absoluta convicción de que él no había cometido el crimen que se le atesoraba, ella se puso a estudiar derecho sacándose la carrera en un tiempo record y convirtiéndose en la representante legal de su hermano Kenny. Tras muchas penurias -incluyendo algún intento de asesinato por parte de su hermano-, Betty Anne logró exonerarlo después de que un análisis de ADN demostrase que él no había sido la persona que en 1983 había asesinado con treinta puñaladas a Katharina Brow.
